The Smell of Other People's Houses - Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock

I really enjoyed reading this book. The story is told from many different young people. The book is set in Alaska which was a new location for me and I found it very interesting. Most of the characters live in this small village in Alaska. Some are natives some are not.

The author is very good at describing things. The title keeps the promise of that and small little things are very good described here. At the beginning I had some problems finding into the story and get hold of all the names and who was who. There are some things I still did not understand. But when the story goes on everything fits together and as depressing as it was sometimes it ended very nice. Maybe a little too neat. There were many issues, almost too many for such a short book, but somehow the author managed to handle them well and equally. The book is more as if there many short stories about a little town and its townsfolk. At the end their lives got even more entangled. Although there are so many issues the book is a nice and easy read. It remembered me of Astrid Lindgren and her books about lovely childhoods except that here the childhoods are not that nice and easy. But in the end everything is fine. And the writing is superb.

A special thank you to Netgalley and Faber and Faber Ltd. For giving me this book in exchange for an honest review
